The Pouilly-sur-Loire vineyard is located in the department of Nièvre, in the region Burgundy-Franche-Comté, on the right bank of the Loire. It is part of the Centre-Loire wine-growing region, alongside appellations such as Sancerre, Menetou-Salon, and Quincy. Internationally renowned for its white wines, the appellation extends primarily around the towns of Pouilly-sur-Loire, Tracy-sur-Loire, Saint-Andelain, and Mesves-sur-Loire.
Two complementary appellations d'origine contrôlée
The vineyard has two appellations d'origine contrôlée (AOC)). The most famous one is Pouilly-Fumé, established in 1937, which produces exclusively white wines from the Sauvignon Blanc grape variety. The second, Pouilly-sur-Loire, is less well-known; it is made from the Chasselas grape variety and accounts for a limited portion of production. Today, Pouilly-Fumé accounts for the bulk of the region’s reputation and wine-growing activity.
A Long and Well-Established History of Winemaking
The Winegrowing in this region dates back to the Gallo-Roman era. The development of river trade on the Loire subsequently fostered the growth of the wine-growing region beginning in the Middle Ages. In the 17th and 18th centuries, Pouilly wines were already widely appreciated in major French cities. Like many European vineyards, it was severely affected by the phylloxera crisis in the late 19th century, before being restored through grafting onto American rootstocks.
Diverse terroirs that give the wines their distinctive character
The character of Pouilly-Fumé wines is closely linked to the diversity of its terroirs. The The soils are composed of limestone, by Kimmeridgian marls, from’flint-bearing clays and more recent limestone formations. This geological richness gives the wines great complexity and a diverse range of aromas. The flint-rich terroirs are particularly associated with the mineral and smoky notes for which the appellation is renowned.
White wines renowned for their finesse and minerality
The Pouilly-Fumé wines are distinguished by their light color, freshness, and elegance. They develop citrus flavors, by exotic fruits, by white flowers and flint, the latter often being associated with siliceous soils. On the palate, they offer lovely tension, pronounced minerality, and a long, aromatic finish. The wines of the Pouilly-sur-Loire appellation, made from Chasselas, are lighter, more delicate, and meant to be enjoyed young.
A premier vineyard in the Centre-Loire region
Today, the Pouilly-sur-Loire wine region covers approximately 1,400 hectares and is among the Leading producers of Sauvignon Blanc in France. Along with its neighbor Sancerre, it contributes to the international reputation of the wines of the Centre-Loire region and has established itself as a symbol of French winemaking excellence, thanks to the richness of its terroirs and the unique character of its white wines.
